Volunteer Committees

The United Way of Garrett County has five volunteer committees in addition to the Executive Committee.  These committees include a Community Response (Allocations) Committee, a   Campaign Committee, a Marketing Committee, a Bylaws Committee and a Volunteer Development Committee.  These committees perform the functions of a volunteer United Way of Garrett County as described under the Committee Bylaws section which can be viewed by clicking here A brief description of each committee’s role is outlined below.

  Community Response (Allocations) Committee

The Community Response (Allocations) Committee of the Garrett United Way meets with affiliated agencies several times each year to review the progress each agency has made  in projects approved the previous year and to learn about proposed projects for the next year.  Each agency is visited at their main site, usually by two committee volunteers who try to learn all they can about the projects underway and those to be proposed for the future.  Then, at the Community Response Committee meeting, a staff and/or Board member from the submitting agency presents their proposal with assistance from the committee members who had visited with them.  The committee volunteers who visited the site explain what they have learned.  Then the entire committee asks questions for clarification and elaboration.  This process insures that the monies provided to the agencies are used for projects benefiting Garrett County.  It also enables many community people to get first hand information about the agencies and their projects.

After all proposals have been examined over the course of several meetings, a final meeting of the committee is held to make a recommendation for those projects which should be funded and a dollar amount for each.  The committee takes into account the value of the projects to Garrett County and the level of giving possible in any given year. This recommendation goes to the Executive Committee for a final decision.

Garrett County’s United Way Campaign goes into full swing in the fall and lasts until the end of April.  During that time, the Campaign Committee seeks payroll deductions and direct donations from the community.  In addition, the proceeds (or a portion thereof) from special events that are committed to the campaign help to reach the annual goal.
